Frosted Cakes
A few years back, I started developing a fascination for cake decorating. Over the years, it’s taken on a life of its own, a sort of hobby-hurricane that has swept up my husband and a number of close friends and family members in its wake. These days, when a special birthday is approaching, you’ll always find me in the kitchen, up to my elbows in frosting and food coloring.
Through it all, my headquarters for inspiration and equipment is Party Favors, a Brookline outpost for all things party-related. I lived in Brookline for an unfortunate number of years before discovering that Party Favors was also a nationally acclaimed bakery, but once I’d tasted one of their sublime cupcakes, I was hooked. Over time, I’ve developed a friendship with Mary Lynn and John Pergantis, the owners of Party Favors.
When we started Moms Going Out, I asked John if he would consider doing a masterclass inside his kitchen. I was thrilled when he agreed. And yes, maybe it’s because I’ve always wanted to take a formal class (I never have), and I think John is a genius with a piping bag. But I’m not the only one, and with only 12 slots available (ahem, 11), I think this is going to be a quick sell-out.
