Winter (fashion) Wonderland…

7 December 2010 56 Comments

Usually, I’m not overly thrilled with the onset of these chilly, wind-whipped, icy days. I long for sundresses and sandals, not clunky cardigans or wooly mammoth sweaters. But after chatting with Marissa Mintzer of the ever fabulous, cutting edge boutique Mint Julep, I think I may be having a change of heart. We had a little chat about winter fashions, and I may be coming around…

Here’s a little snippet of our discussion:

What are the trends for this winter?
A big trend for this winter- particularly the holiday season- is sequins. Sequins are no longer just for nighttime. A sequined tank can be layered during the day underneath a blazer or a cardigan with skinny jeans. Another huge trend is the one-shoulder style, whether on a dress or a top. At Mint Julep we have a ton of one-shoulder dresses, from cocktail attire by Nanette Lepore to our one-shoulder sweater by Susana Monaco.

How do I create a fabulous look for less?
It’s easy to create a fabulous look for less– it’s all about being creative! You can easily get more mileage out of one dress by changing the accessories you pair with it. Try swapping out black pumps with a pair of colorful heels or change up your jewelry to something vintage or one-of-a-kind.

What kind of accessories can really update/enhance a look?
This season, printed tights are in. A bit unexpected, printed tights can easily finish off your look. At Mint Julep, we are loving our new colorful Milly printed tights and as always, our Spanx printed tights are very reliable. Of course, jewelry is an easy finishing touch. Try a sparkly hair pin, a pretty cuff bracelet, an oversized cocktail ring, or layers of long gold necklaces.

Is there any way to be comfortable, warm, AND fashionable during the holiday season?
Of course! A printed scarf is always in style and will always keep you a little extra warm. “Winter white” is always classy, so it’s easy to snuggle up in a big sweater that’s still right on trend. Mint Julep has also showcased a ton of festive sweaters and jackets this season, from bedazzled crew necks to sequin-encrusted blazers.

Hmm. Sequins? Sparkly jewelry? Where are the reindeer sweaters? And the rollneck turtlenecks? And the wide wale corduroys? Could it be possible? I could perhaps swap out some of my lovely fleece jackets for fun winter fashion? I mean, I love my fleece, but it’s really hard to find a fancy fleece dress for holiday parties. I like these options much better.

Looking forward to our evening out at Mint Julep even MORE now! Fun, fashionable winterizing. I can definitely get into that. See you in the spring, sundresses!
