Winter (fashion) Wonderland…

Usually, I’m not overly thrilled with the onset of these chilly, wind-whipped, icy days. I long for sundresses and sandals, not clunky cardigans or wooly mammoth sweaters. But after chatting with Marissa Mintzer of the ever fabulous, cutting edge boutique Mint Julep, I think I may be having a change of heart. We had a little chat about winter fashions, and I may be coming around…
Here’s a little snippet of our discussion:
What are the trends for this winter?
A big trend for this winter- particularly the holiday season- ...

Welcome, Kim

If a duo is dynamic, a trio is three times as much fun. We’re excited to welcome Kim Foley MacKinnon to the Moms Going Out team. Kim is a veteran journalist and editor whose recent gigs have included editing Daily Candy Boston Kids and authoring the amazing new book Boston Baby: A Field Guide for Urban Parents. Now, Kim is the editor-in-chief of The Savvy Factory, a new site that covers food, fashion, travel, services and products. It’s mostly for Boston-based readers, but there’s plenty to love no matter where ...

Babies on the big screen

We’re so excited about Babies, the breathtaking, new documentary film that’s coming out this week (on Mother’s Day – when else?). From the looks of the trailer, this will be a fascinating look at contrasting cultures, as seen through the lens of raising children. The film follows the lives of four babies, one from Mongolia, one from Namibia, one from Tokyo and one from San Francisco, through the first year of life, from birth to first steps. The cinematography is lush and the babies are so. freaking. cute.
Don’t miss this ...

Kids in a candy shop: Cake decorating at Party Favors

No kidding! These mamas did a little Freaky Friday twist last Monday, as they left their serious sides at the door of Party Favors. As we were escorted downstairs by the lovely Mary Lynn and John Pergantis, we all reverted to our kids selves. There was chocolate and cake alongside ginormous bowls of sugary frosting goodness in a glorious rainbow of colors. Willy Wonka gone wild.
After donning our fancy aprons, we separated into two groups. The cake masters and the cupcake designers. The ...

Watch out…these mamas are PACKIN’ SNACKS!

That’s right. Heads up to all. The fittest moms are packin’ snacks. The healthy kind. For THEMSELVES.
It has come to my attention that one of the biggest obstacles faced by harried, or even not so harried moms today is the snack habit. Kids need snacks. Feed them, and they stop crying. They smile, they play happily. Moms love to give snacks. And we try to make them healthy. Which is great. Peanut butter on apples, string cheese and whole ...

Frosted Cakes

A few years back, I started developing a fascination for cake decorating. Over the years, it’s taken on a life of its own, a sort of hobby-hurricane that has swept up my husband and a number of close friends and family members in its wake. These days, when a special birthday is approaching, you’ll always find me in the kitchen, up to my elbows in frosting and food coloring.
Through it all, my headquarters for inspiration and equipment is Party Favors, a Brookline outpost for all things party-related. I lived in ...

Sex, wine and chocolate

Sounds like all the ingredients for love, right? Well, sort of. Let’s call this a dress rehearsal for Valentine’s Day (or anytime you’re in the mood for love). Moms Going Out is proud to welcome Kristen Chase, author of “The Mominatrix’s Guide to Sex” for a mini-libido boot camp just in time for V-day.
Moms Going Out: Seduction Junction will take place on February 9 at 7pm. We’re hosted by the pastry geniuses at Finale Desserts, where they know a thing or two about the aphrodisiac commonly known as chocolate. Aided ...

Resolving not to resolve too much

Wow. That was fast. Another year gone. 2010 starts NOW. Are you ready? What’s in store for you this year? I’m not big on resolutions, but I am big on keeping reality in check. For me, the most important thing is to make sure that I, my family, and friends are happy, healthy, and doing the best that they can.
As a fitness professional, we see January as our biggest month. It’s THE month. The one where everyone vows to get ...

PARTY ON!!

Wow, what a way to finish off our 2009 Moms Going Out series. This past Tuesday, millions of moms(ok, slight exaggeration, but the energy FELT like that many people) descended on Magic Beans as we celebrated the holidays with a private shopping and wrapping party. While we shopped, we replenished our energy with a lavish spread by the new and fabulous Regal Beagle, right next to Magic Beans. One of the best things that I learned that night (and I did learn quite a bit!)was that the ...

We’re falling for these fun fall activities…

Happy November, all! Let the holiday craziness begin! I’ve started to feel like Halloween is now the start of the holiday frenzy, with the rush of candy and parties and friends that jumpstarts November. We start the month with a burst of energy, so might as well find some fun activities to fuel the fire.
It gets a bit harder to get outside during these chillier months, but hey-there’s no snow on the ground, so take advantage of the last beautiful bit of foliage and dry ground to ...
